(Look Again) – February 2016

(Look Again) by Marie Brenneis

Opening reception: Thursday 4th February 2016, 7-10pm free entry

Daily opening hours: 5th-29th February 2016, 9am-5pm daily free entry

In her first solo show (Look Again), Marie Brenneis focuses on the assumptions society makes us make, and questions the meanings that are deeply rooted in our class systems: meanings that to her must be challenged. Widely recognised for her colourful, absurd spectacles, she makes her own sense of societal norms, using highly saturated kitsch colours and strangely spaced objects to offer the viewer a maximised sensory overload: to invite them to look (and think) again. It is through colour, objects and space that Marie finds meaning. With her colour explosions she asks why colour is restrained or even absent today. Through her spatial arrangements she creates chaos and hysteria. And with her use of familiar everyday objects, she asks us to question the meaning we give to them.

It is the relationship between the artist and audience that interests Marie. She wants to interrupt passive thinking and makes the viewer challenge any assumptions and preconceptions they might hold. But loaded with context and stereotypes, can we ever be free of associations and judgements? Marie Brenneis thinks so. By contrasting the conventional and the odd in a humorous way, she asks you to join her on her quest to kick against the norm.

Marie Brenneis was born in Wigan in 1970. She now lives and works in Hackney Wick, London. She completed a BA in Fine Art and Photography, UEL (2009) followed by an MA in the Body and Performance, Trinity Laban, London,(2010). She is currently undertaking a practice-led PhD at the Cass, London.
